Do you like Korean food?
In my opinion it’s the second worst food on the planet.
I will be the first to admit I haven’t had a lot of exposure to Korean food. But the Korean restaurants I’ve been to, I went with Koreans, and they all approved heartily. And I’m still not a fan.
Recently though we tried Picnic -K street food in New West and I thought it was pretty good. We had the Bibimbap and Mandu and both delivered. Especially the Mandu.
Then a Korean BBQ opened up in a brand new building on Carnarvon.
Merilynn popped her head in one day to check it out and discovered they do Dolsot Bibimbap, the “premium,” stone bowl version of the dish. The kind she fell in love with while she lived in Korea. The stone bowl creates a socarrat with the rice, which I found underwhelming.
A torch underneath the bowl would help that along. The flavour was good, though I’d love a second egg in there since we always share.
They don’t have a standalone Mandu appetizer — three Mandu come with three seaweed rolls instead.
I basically think of it as the Korean spring roll with seaweed as the wrapper instead of the usual won ton wrapper. Merilynn has never seen these and didn’t care for them. I actually liked them, though not sure if I ever need to eat them again.
The Mandu were good, but we have had better. We both prefer them soft and these had a crispy texture.
I had the most popular brand of Korean beer, Cass. A very light lager. It was good, however too light to be a favorite of mine.
Can I tell you how much I love Korean food? That will never happen.
But Galbi isn’t terrible. And Merilynn said it reminded her of Korea. So if you’re a fan of Korean food, maybe give it a try.
