It’s such a lovely day today. Since it’s nearing the end of October and likely to be one of the last nice days for a while, we decided to head downtown for a stroll around a part of the seawall.
Our destination was Cardero’s for brunch, a really nice spot right on the water at Coal Harbour.
I should have checked their hours, though. We got there 45 minutes before they opened. While it’s a nice spot with good food, it’s not worth waiting that long for.
A quick Google search for “brunch near me” came up with Sequel, a highly rated restaurant and bar on West Georgia, just three blocks away.
It’s a modern space, on the smaller side, but somewhere you want to be. I’m sure the bar is a really great spot to chill for a few hours on a Friday night.
Do you know what a dirty coffee is? I didn’t. I do now, and I don’t ever need another. It’s a shot of hot espresso poured over a cup of cold milk.

The idea is to get the dynamic flavor and temperature contrast of two liquids combining into a unique taste sensation.
It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t blow me away either. Once was enough.
Merilynn had a cappuccino, a step above Starbucks and two steps below Italy.
For brunch she had the Asparagus Garden.

Eggs to order, fresh asparagus, tomatoes and golden beets. Everything on this plate was good, but the beets were the star.
I had the “Fly me to the Bennies.”

Had I not had a tooth pulled the day before, I would have enjoyed it more. As it was, the thick-cut bacon was very difficult for me to chew. Totally my fault for not making better choices.
The Benny was great otherwise. The eggs were soft and the potatoes very crispy. The fresh fruit is always a nice touch. I just had to leave the bacon off to the side.
Sequel turned out to be a nice backup to our original plan. The Asparagus Garden was a winner, my Benny was great apart from the bacon (my own fault), and the cappuccino was decent. I’d go back to try the bar on a Friday night, and I’d skip the dirty coffee.
Score: 8/10
