When it’s comes to Indian food in Surrey there’s Tasty Bistro. And then there’s everything else.
But one cannot live on Tasty alone. No matter how good it is.
So tonight we are going try something different.
After digging through a few Reddit posts and other online info I discovered Rana Catering.
Very high ratings, pretty reasonable prices.
Chana Bhatura to start.

It’s a deep fried naan and chick peas in curry.
Beautiful flavour, but not spicy enough. Have to make sure I get it “Indian” hot next time. That bread is so amazing. Nice curry too.
We are keeping it pretty white tonight and are just getting some butter chicken, rice and lacha paratha.

This is a excellent Butter Chicken.
I mean this might be one that actually compares to Tasty’s Butter Chicken which in my book is the baseline for all butter chicken.
Rich, flavourful and creamy with tender and moist chicken. The spices in the curry were nicely balanced, nothing overpowering.
And when you compare the price it’s really hard to beat. It’s about $7 cheaper than Tasty’s.
But then I ran into a problem.

This is not Latcha Paratha. At least not like any Latxha Paratha I’ve ever had.
I’ve even gone to the lengths to learn how to make this bread so that when I use the KFI Butter Chicken sauce from Costco I don’t miss out on the bread. That’s how much I like it.
This one is actually more like a Naan bread. Soft with none of those beautiful buttery, layers. It wasn’t bad. Just disappointing. I was expecting something else. And if you’ve read my blog at all you know how I feel about food. And yes, Tasty makes a brilliant, and proper, Latcha Paratha.
So now I’m going to have a dilemma every time I want a curry.
Splurge on Tasty to get the best Butter Chicken with really great Latcha?
Or sacrifice the ability to get my favorite flatbread, go with Naan instead and save a few bucks with an almost as good Butter Chicken from Rana?
Maybe I’ll have to flip a Rupee up into the air and let Shiva or Ganesh decide for me.
