Cafe at Mandeville

Last time we were at our favorite Garden Centre I noticed a cafe while I was walking around the place but it didn’t really register in my brain.

Then Merilynn found it last week on a Google search as one of Burnaby’s best benedicts. So of course we had to go try it didn’t we?

What you will find when you get here is a counter service cafe.

There’s a nice selection of breakfasts and lunch options, with 7 different Benedict’s to choose from.

After ordering at the counter you grab a seat and they bring you your food.

It’s quite a nice atmosphere. Open with lots of natural light from all the windows and the opaque ceiling. On this particular morning we were treated to a symphony of a lot of rain falling on the rooftops. It was ery pleasant way to enjoy breakfast.

We decided to share a Benny and an Herb and Cheddar scone.

The scone itself was delicious. Very freshly baked, with nice herby notes and the sharp cheddar flavours coming through. I would just skip the whipped butter they give you. Sorry that’s not 100% butter. Next time I’ll sneak a little Kerrygold in with me. Once you’ve had the good stuff it’s hard to go back.

We each had a latté, neither being hot enough Decent enough otherwise..

And finally to the Eggs Benedict.

We decided on the Blackstone Benny. The Blackstone swaps out the ham for bacon and adds a slice of tomato. Poached soft of course. Anything else is an offense to the gods.

Ok ya it was good. But I don’t need to bother looking for a pen and paper to write home about it.

The egg was cooked well, which it should be if you sort of specialize in the dish. I could do without the hash bwotns though. The best thing I could say about them was that they were really crunchy. Deep fried though, the mark of a lazy chef.

So the questions is, is this one of Burnaby’s best Benedict’s?

The answer?

No.

Don’t take that the wrong way. It’s good. And I really like the atmosphere here. But I would t drive out of my way for it.
