We’re stopping at the much-ballyhooed Time Out Market for lunch while we’re in the Oakridge area.
This place has been blowing up on YouTube and Instagram since it opened a couple of months ago, and of course I’d like to check it out.
Apparently there’s a $50 bowl of ramen here. Not that I’d drop 50 bucks on ramen, but there must be something worth trying.
Finding this place was tricky. We walked the entire first floor without spotting the market, and I never found a mall map until I googled one.
After asking two or three people who had no clue, we finally found a mall employee. She pointed us up a set of escalators to the second floor, where the food court is located.
There aren’t too many vendors here that you’d recognize from a typical mall food court, but you will find offerings of a similar nature.
What I found particularly strange was the amount of alcohol on offer. We walked by two bars, both open at noon, with hardly anybody in the place.
After checking out the options, we ended up deciding on Indian: Peacock, by none other than Vikram Vij.
I’m a pretty big fan of Vikram. I’ve eaten at Vij’s and My Shanti many times, and it’s always been excellent.
I have a good feeling about this butter chicken. The sauce was tasty, thinner than I’m used to but full of flavour, and the rice soaked it right up. My only complaint is the chicken itself. They could have trimmed it better, and a couple of big fatty chunks were unpleasant.
At $26 a plate, it’s not cheap. Really nothing in this place is, or in the whole mall for that matter.
The mango Lassi paired perfectly, soothing as the butter chicken did have a nice kick to it. Though it’s white people spicy.
The one reasonably priced find: Mello Doughnuts. Their strawberry cream Bismarcks are the crème de la crème of doughnuts in this city.
Not sure that I’ll be back. There’s nothing at Oakridge for me shopping-wise, and it’s not convenient to get to.
Peacock was decent, but $26 is Tasty Bistro money, and Tasty is superior.
