Here is my list of the coffee shops (that I have tried) and their place on my “Best of” list for New Westminster. While I may mention some thoughts on location, atmosphere, service or other attributes, this is a list of the best coffee, using a standard cappuccino as a baseline.
If your favorite coffee shop isn’t on the list, I will endeavor to try it all at some point. Drop me a note and let me know which one you like.
From best to worst…
- Cafe Log – New West Station
I have no idea what their name is supposed to mean, but this is the best cappuccino in New Westminster. It brought me right back to Italy and the incredible coffee culture there. So good I went back for a second that day. My go to in New West.
2. Mukasi – Front Street
The worst location and the worst hours but excellent coffee. Roasted right onsite, the coffee is excellent. With the new staircase off of Columbia you can avoid all the vagrants and enjoy a fantastic brew in a cool spot.
3. Moodswing – Front Street
Just about as good as Mukasi, it’s just a little too left wing in here for me to be comfortable. If I get a coffee here it’s always to go, and I go as quickly as possible. I almost feel the need to put a Libtard Alert sign outside the building.
4. Cafe Mira – Victoria Hills
One of our go to stops for coffee when we lived at the other end of town, this quiet spot make a really good coffee and has a pleasant atmosphere.
5. After Hours Cafe
A great location with a nice selection of pastries and desserts all made on site or locally. It’s very new at the time of this write-up so the baristas may need a few weeks to really get into a groove. Very good potential here.
6. Coasters Cafe
The coffee is good but the atmosphere is not for me. They have tried to make it feel a little like you’re in a west coast rain forest inside. I just feel depressed when I’m there.
7. Waves – Columbia Street and Uptown
Better than a lot of the chain options nearby, but just does not reach the quality of the small cafes just a couple minutes away.
8. Starbucks – Columbia Square and Westminster Centre
Reliably mediocre no matter where in the world you go.
9. Serious Coffee – Carnarvon Street
Every time I’ve come here my lattes have been way too hot. The location is not ideal if you want to sit and relax for a while. Small and uncomfortable.
10. Second Cup – Royal Centre
The only time I found myself at a Second Cup over the last few years is when the idiot executives at Starbucks decided to stop doing Eggnog lattes at Christmas. Otherwise not my favorite.
