Sushi Hinode

What with the burning down of our favorite sushi restaurant in New Westminster it is now time for us to find a new place.

My actual favorite Sushi is Sora Sushi House, but as it’s in an old Subway it’s not my favorite spot to sit. Best Toro Nigiri I’ve had.

Sushi Hinode must be less than sad about the destruction of Ki Sushi, being right across the street and all. It can’t exactly hurt their business having one less competitor around. And as such we find it quite busy when we pop in tonight for our first time.

Here’s a quick fire summary on what we tried.

Deep fried poached egg.

This is a first for me, and I thought it was great. A soft yolk with a slightly crunchy exterior and served with a sauce that wasn’t too sweet. That’s unlike anything I’ve ever had. Will definitely try it again.

Pork Gyoza.

A great savoury filling but we found the wrapper less than ideal. A little too crunchy and dry for my liking. Nice tasting sauce for dipping.

Real crab California Roll

The California roll is my baseline for any sushi restaurant and this one was good. Mild flavour from the real crab, not that awful imitation stuff. The rice had the right texture and flavour.

Tempura Prawns

Could have been left in the dryer another minute. Not undercooked per se, but we would prefer them a little more crunchy.

If you spend $50 you get a free dish, the choice was Salmon Kama or a deep-fried California roll. As I really dislike deep-fried rolls we went with the Kama, another first for me. Not knowing what it was I was a little surprised by the consistency of the dish until I realized what it was, the collar, from right behind the head. It’s very fatty giving it a different texture than I expected.. Very tasty though. Just watch out for the fins.

While it was very busy tonight the service was very good and the food came up quickly. The value is on par with other the sushi restaurants I’ve been in.

So not a perfect night. But the potential is certainly here. We will be back to check it out again.
