OEB

Burnaby BC

We had heard about how amazing this place was for breakfast so one Saturday morning off we went.

It’s located at the not so “Amazing Brentwood” in Burnaby, one of four locations around Vancouver.

We arrived at approximately 9 am. Not early by any means, but certainly not late. To our surprise we were told we would be in for at least a two hour wait. Well I don’t care how good it may be, I’m not hanging around two hours for any meal.

Perhaps the waiting might have been worth it though, since we ended up going to Ricky’s Cafe. Ick. Review to follow…..

A week later we tried again, on Friday this time. And we were able to walk right in.

Upon perusing the menu one immediately gets the feeling that you are not in for your usual sunny side up eggs and bacon. Items such as the Truffled Squash Benny and Duck Confit Crostini get your pallette excited quite quickly

I had the Holy Crab.

A Benny with crab and a dijonaise sause. Overall the combination worked well, however with the amount of crab and the Hollandaise it was very rich. If I didn’t have the OJ to help cut through that richness it would have been tough to finish. They do serve their bennies on a butter croissant. It was interesting to try, and it was pretty good. I think I’m a bit too traditional in this regard though and still prefer my Bennie on an English muffin. Potatoes were great. Fried in beef fat, how could they not be?

Merilynn had the Lobster and Shrimp Crepe.

She got the better of the two dishes. The brown butter Hollandaise was great. Never had that before and I’m gonna give it a go myself. Really great combination of flavours. We did decide to skip the $28 dollar sturgeon caviar add on. $25 was expensive enough.

Would it have been worth 2 hours standing on a cold Vancouver January day for? No for sure. A warm July day? Still no. So if OEB is on your breakfast bucket list go on a weekday. And early. I’m told you can put your name on the waitlist by phone so if you are organized enough to get up, give them a call, a couple errands done and then head on over.

Food 8/10

Value 6/10 ($75 bucks for breaky is a little steep)

Service 7/10

Ambiance 8/10

Overall 7/10

OEB is something you should probably try once, unless you have to wait two hours. Try The Gray Olive up the street if that’s the case. My review can be found here

  1. Heya Greg! First time reader! Local here in van and seeking out awesome food too! 😉

I noticed here, your cross link to the Grey olive post you made is missing the “S” in Gregs in the web address, so it goes to a dead link.

Just thought i would let ya know!

Great content, and looking forward to reading all of these reviews. (already planning to hit the happy Lamb hotpot because ive been to two other locations that looked very different from your experience!)
