SOCO

I’m cleaning up my drafts folder a little bit and found this from a few years ago in Toronto. The corn fritters are now on my menu.

We have been wandering around the CN tower area for a bit and we’d like to stop and get a couple of drinks with maybe a view of the tower. Bar Caña, on the roof of a hotel near the tower looked promising. However it was pretty packed tonight, the Blue Jays game had let out just a few minutes ago and everybody seems to be here.

SOCO, on the first floor of the same building gave us the same view and we were able to sit down right away.

Our drinks, a classic G&T for me and Mary’s Berries for Merilynn. Tequila, lime, pineapple, basil, rosemary syrup and blackberries in the Mary’# Berries. Very refreshing.

For a little nibble I thought we would try the Tempura Corn. I remember growing up as a kid my aunt making corn fritters at special occasion dinners and me eating 10 of them if I could.Thougb the corn fritter seems to have fallen out of favor. You don’t see it much anywhere.

Which honestly is a shame. They are fantastic. These were a little different than my aunt’s, and are a good modern approach to the concept.

These were absolutely amazing. Mind blowing even. Yes they were that good. For me it was like when I discovered how well Coca Cola and grapefruit go together. A Eureka moment.

Nice and crispy texture, that hot honey Kewpie dip really complements the sweetness of the corn.

I decided right then and there I’ll be trying these at home.

Nice view, good service, refreshing drinks and a great appy. The food scene in The Big Smoke is turning out to be pretty good.
