Dinner with one of the kids tonight. They get to pick and tonight it’s Ki Sushi.

As usual my Toro Nigiri.

Plus a Red Tuna.

Much better than last time we were here. Proper temperature and not stringy. Nice flavour on red tuna.

Prawn Tempura

Crispy, crunchy, delicious prawns with a yummy dipping sauce. How can you go wrong? Well I guess if you let them get cold. We didn’t.

Dynamite and California Roll

Pretty standard stuff but delicious nonetheless. I do like they don’t usually serve their rolls too cold here. That allows all the flavors to really come through.

Bow where can we get dessert?

We are off to Piva!

While I was in Prince George visiting my son and his family last week we had the opportunity to get out for dinner, just the two of us.

I asked him “Of all the restaurants in PG that you’ve wanted to try but haven’t yet which did you want to try tonight?”

He came up with Mr Sushi, about 15 minutes north of PG on the Hart Hwy.

I’m always down for sushi. Even in Prince George.

We are trying a few staples off the menu and one roll I haven’t seen before.

Pork Gyoza

Pretty standard fare in Sushi restaurant here, and pretty standard quality. Tastes good, but it’s no different than any other Gyoza I’ve had. I wonder if they all come from the same place?

Toro Nigiri

Not the best Toro. The flavour was ok, but it came in 3 different temperatures. Still frozen, cool and room temp. I do prefer it room temp as that allows the flavours to shine, frozen isn’t great. The fish wasn’t the best quality though. The fish had a lot of sinew, creating an unenjoyable eating experience. Add the poor quality to the varying temperatures and you seldon get the best Nigiri.

Mexican Roll

Tuna and avocado with tempura crunch with two spicy sauces.

Good flavour combinations with the tuna and sauces, there was just too much of the sauce. The roll is drowning on that plate

The miso soup was as good as any miso soup I’ve had a gazillion times before.

Our tea came to the table cold. But they were quick to replace it.

Considering where we are, Mr. Sushi is pretty good, well exceeding my expectations. But you can do better in Vancouver.

I don’t really feel like sushi tonight but the wife does, so we’re at her favorite Sushi place in New West, Ki Sushi.

But do I feel like Soba or Ramen?

Chicken Yakisoba I think

I was a little concerned about this choice though. Last time we were here I had sushi, but another in our party had the Yakisoba.

For some reason his dish didn’t come out of the kitchen until the rest of us had basically finished our food.

Well, the same thing happened tonight. Everyone else was done and my noodles still hadn’t appeared.

The yakisoba was very good. A generous portion of really good chicken. Not fatty or grisly at all. There was a good amount of veggies. The sauce could use a bit more flavour, it was a bit bland. Overall though good eating..

Pretty good value for $14.

But timing is important. It was awkward being the last one to eat.

If they can’t get the soba out quicker they really should delay everyone else’s food.

Quick stop in for a bite today.

Another lovely, not sunny day in Vancouver.

So while I’m getting Toro and a real Crab California Roll

Merilynn got the Nabeyaki Udon.

Its a ramen soup base with Udon noodles, prawn tempura, vegetables, (not sure which ones) seafood, (not sure what kinds) chicken and egg.

Pretty good, but pretty filling.

You need to those prawn tempura really quickly though as it just gets soggy. And they aren’t wonderful soggy. It would make more sense to me to serve them on the side.

My real crab California roll was very good. None of that artificial, fishy tasting fake crab in this roll.

Toro is my favorite sashimi. It has a much softer texture than regular tuna.

So a pretty good snack. The fish was fresh. The soup was a really big portion and very tasty.

It’s been a little while since we’ve had sushi and we have a bit of a craving so off we go to Ki.

This is our usual go to for sushi in New West but that may change after tonight.

The Miso was rather bland.

The Gomai was fine.

From top to bottom: the red tuna was good, the red snapper was not and the tuna belly was excellent.

The gyosa itself was fine but the sauce was too heavy on vinegar tonight. Didn’t bother with it and just used soy for dipping.

The tuna sashimi was very good but it came very cold. I had to let it sit for a bit to warm up so it had some flavor.

And that wasn’t such a big deal because of the biggest problem of the evening.

Alex ordered Beef Yakisoba which I’m sure they actually forgot about. And it even took a few minutes to finally wave down a staff member to let them know about it.

If we haven’t slowed down eating we would have finished before he even got his food.

They gave us some lame excuse about Beef Yakisoba taking longer to make, but that didn’t explain why his California roll didn’t come out with our food.

It wasn’t like it was particularly busy in the restaurant tonight. Somebody just dropped the ball.

I did hear from Alex though that even with the wait it was still really delicious. He gave it a 9 out of 10.

And I know I shouldn’t write off a restaurant completely because of one subpar meal. But yeah I do think it may be time to try somewhere else.

We haven’t been coming to Cactus Club as much of late.

Meeting the boys for a little liquid refreshment.

Might as well get a little proper food as well.

They do a really nice prawn crunch roll. I’ve actually come to prefer the Sesame soy wrap over the seaweed found in more traditional Nori.

The soy glaze is a nice accompaniment which is offset nicely by the addition of mango.

Followed that up with a zesty Whiskey sour.

They do make it properly here. Raw egg whites in the mix. Shaken, very well. I like to watch the bartender to see if they’re mixing it long enough to whip those egg whites up properly.

Well as you can see they did.

Cactus rarely disappoints.

Tonight was no exception.

It’s date night.

We haven’t been for sushi in forever.

So now the question as to where to go. I’ve been hearing very good things about Sushi Well but she doesn’t like it there. They have purple rice?

I suggested Hyack Sushi. I haven’t been there.

Nope. She wants Ki. So that’s that.

I have been here before and it was very good.

We started with the Mango Roll special. It looked so good we dove in before I got a pic.I

t’s a California roll with mango and what I assume is masago on top. It was really good.

We next had the prawn tempura.

Very yummy. Though I wouldn’t have minded it being fried a touch longer to crisp it up a bit more. Still very delicious.

Then came the gyoza.

I’m not sure why exactly but somehow I prefer these over Chinese pot stickers. Pretty much a must for me when I have sushi. It’s a pork dumpling steamed first and then pan-fried for that great crispy exterior.

And lastly the nigiri.

Tai (Red Snapper), Red Tuna, Kani (snow crab), Tuna, Toro (Tuna belly) and Hamachi (Yellowtail).

The best was the snow crab, what flavour! My least favorite was the Red tuna. It was a little too chewy.  I enjoyed them all though.

They also have good sushi rice here. Some restaurants it’s too sticky but not here.

To me you can’t go wrong at Ki Sushi.

Is it the best I’ve ever had?

No. Definitely not.

But for a little town like New West it’s great.

Coquitlam BC

Popped in for a quick bite.

Prawn Crunch Roll

Very good tonight, as usual.

The soy glaze and the mango are what really makes this for me. Would I prefer seaweed? Sure. But I’m starting to dig the sesame paper.

Whiskey sour to drink. They make it properly with egg whites!

One of my favorites.

The sour from the lemon up front with a hint of sweetness that lingers on the tongue. All silky smooth from the egg white.

As usual a good experience at Cactus.
