We are trying a new spot for Indian food today, Delight Street Eats.

I’m not sure if this qualifies as a Chaat House. To be honest I don’t even know what what Chaat really is. But I’ve been a couple times and have always enjoyed it.

Im starting with a Mango Lassi, a yogurt based drink that can come in handy when you have spicy food. And we aren’t ordering white people Indian food today. Ok, we aren’t going full “make it like your in New Delhi spicy” either. Somewhere in between.

We are starting with Chole Bathura.

I’m familiar with Chana Bhatura. Chickpea curry served with a fluffy deep fried bread. We had a very good example of it recently from Rana Catering.

But what is Chole Bhature?

Well apparently it’s the same thing. The name is just a regional difference.

Except in this case.

That bread clearly isn’t fluffy. But it sure is crispy and airy. Reminds me of a papadum. In fact I suspect that it is.

Regardless it was very good. The chickpeas had a rich, intense flavour that the bread sopped up nicely.

Biryani is alone pot meal, fragrant rice layered with a curry marinated

meat or vegetables and spices.

This is one of the finest examples I’ve ever tasted of this amazing dish.

I’ve never tasted a Biryani with this depth of flavour. I could not believe my tastebuds. With “fall off the bone tender” chicken this could have been a meal in itself.

But I wanted to try something different.

So I asked the server to bring us something white people don’t order.

We got this:

Looks great, but what is it?

My first thought was chicken. But wrong texture.

Then I was thinking a dough of some kind. Nope.

Turns out it was a soy product of some kind, kind of like tofu. Though with a denser consistensy that I’m used to.

In the end, while the curry itself was very tasty both of us found a texture of the soy product a little off-putting and it ended up not being our favorite. You win some, you lose some.

Regardless of the last dish though the food here was spectacular.

A great Biryani, yummy Chole Bhature and creamy mango lasis made for a really great lunch.

So let’s talk doughnuts.

Gourmet ones.

Are Gourmet Doughnuts gourmet?

In a word, no.

Are they excellent?

Very much so.

Freshly made, light and fluffy. Everything a good donut should be. Not like the dried out cardboard found at grocery stores or Tim Hortons these days.

But what really surprised me the most was the selection.

A huge variety.

But not what I would call gourmet.

“Gourmet” doughnut shops, like Yums and Cartems, rest in peace, offer more than just your garden variety flavours.

Yum’s has a Lemon Zinger doughnut with real meringue on top.

Cartems had Watermelon Cucumber doughnut that blew my mind.

The strawberry cream with mascarpone cheese at Mello is the best donut I’ve ever had. Period.

And while Gourmet doughnuts does live up to the name, it is however an excellent doughnut.

A honey dip, mango bismarck, cinnamon sugar twist and sour cream glazed.

Including these 4 varieties I was also able to try the peach Bismark and the chocolate dip.

The only thing I didn’t care for in any of the doughnuts was the actual mango filling. It didn’t taste much like mango and left a bad aftertaste.

Everything was very good.

All very fresh, all light and fluufy.

Just not what I would call gourmet. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Yes I miss Cartem’s.

Yes I go to Mello every chance I get. And it’s not exactly just down the street from me.

Yes I love Yum’s. Always have something unique to try.

But a fresh and delicious honey dip of chocolate Long John always hits the spot. And unlike the $5 price tag at those other spots you can get a donut here for half that.

It’s great seeing the fresh donut making a comeback again.

Update 07/29/25

Had the craving for doughnuts again.

Old Fashioned Glazed

Cinnamon Sugar Twist

Chocolate glaze with sprinkles

All three were fresh and delicious.

Tonight we are meeting some friends at the Keg.

Lobster Bisque is on the menu, so that’s a must try. Not even an option.

Have I had better Lobster Bisque? Yes. But even mediocre Lobster Bisque is still better than almost any other type of soup. So ya, it’s good. It could use some actual chunks of lobster. Maybe the bits destined for my bowl got missed? Maybe they don’t put in any. Either way, that would make it better.

However, the lobster flavour is definitely there. It’s rich and decadent. And very satisfying.

Merilynn had Tuna Tartare.

This I didn’t enjoy at all. Frankly neither did she.

The balance was off. Too much avocado was one issue. That normally shouldn’t be a problem. Avocados are awesome.

But the flavour of the dish was flat. I didn’t enjoy my first bite, which didn’t lend well to wanting a second. A third was out of the question. A soy glaze or wasabi mayo would go a long way to making this better. If those pita chips or intended to be used as a scoop for the tartar they did not hold up well and broke every time.

But there is a happy ending for the Tuna Tartare. After taking most of it as a takeaway, she added it as a topper to a salad at work today and it transformed what was a boring, tasteless appetizer into a delicious lunch. Or so she tells me. Based on what I tasted I’m not sure I’d come to the same conclusion.

I went with a steak. I mean really. What else is the Keg known for.

Having said that, this is not Gordon Ramsay Steak.

Is it just me or is the idea of a bacon wrapped filet way out of fashion now?

Tenderloin is my go to steak. It’s almost the only cut I order now.

And for the life of me, The Keg is the only restaurant I can think of that still wraps a filet.

The main issue is the bacon not being cooked well enough before the steak is medium rare. And don’t you dare say just cook the steak more you Philistine.

But it was cooked exactly to order, with a nice crust and excellent flavour. The selection of seasonal vegetables was excellent. Minus the fungus, which went right on to Merilynn’s plate.

But I must remember to order it without bacon next time we are here.

A post dinner latte, which was excellent. Hopefully won’t keep me up all night.

And a mini Creme Brule. The large one is just to big and rich too be enjoyed.

The mini has just the right amount of sweetness to cleanse the palate. They did a nice job of getting the sugar caramelized without turning the custard into soup.

So to summarize: The soup was good, the tuna wasn’t, and the steak was right on par as per my expectations from the Keg.

The next time I need a good steak though I’m going back to see Gordon.

11/18/25

in for a couple beers with the guys tonight and am having a quick fight, the lobster Bisque.

One thjng I will say is that while it’s not the best Lobster Bisque ever, it is decent and it is consistent. Which is something in itself.

Actually it’s a bit better when eaten on its own instead of just an appetizer I think.

All right we’ve been doing tons of home renos and frankly neither us feel like cooking tonight.

I’m getting a pizza.

And wouldn’t you know it I found a new Pizza House.

Well new to me anyways. I’m not sure how long the Philosophy Pizza House has been there as it is in a very odd location. Right in the middle of an industrial area in the Bridgeview area of Surrey.

Looks pretty good though and with the rating of 4.9 on Google I am definitely trying it.

So this is pretty similar to the pizza I get from my favorite pizzeria in New West.

It’s a Pepperoni with Capicollo, Prosciutto, pineapple and parmesan cheese.

The the biggest difference between the two is the Capicollo. This one was pleasantly spicy.  Good undercarriage on a chewy crust with fior di latte mozzarella.

Is it as good as Pizzeria Ludica?

Not quite. But close.

Close enough that if you live on the Surrey side you don’t have to cross the river.

But if you’re doing pick up be careful and try to not get robbed. You are in Bridgeview after all.

One bite review

Quick late night snack after Taekwondo tonight. Worked pretty hard tonight, need to refuel

Since we’re in Surrey and we don’t have a Mary Brown’s close to us thought it was a good opportunity to pop in.

Something’s a little off on the seasoning.

Unfortunately not their best effort tonight.

Still pretty good though.

Surrey BC

Well since we are in Surrey we thought we would get some chicken as we don’t have a Mary Brown’s location close by to us.

As usual very good. And got a pretty good deal tonight.

6 pieces of chicken, fries, small gravy, small salad for $22.

This is a stock image, forgot to take one myself.

Ok, so could leave the salad. Got the macaroni. It was actually pretty terrible.

But the chicken was crispy and tasty. Not greasy, moist and well cooked.

Can someone explain to me what happened to KFC and why they can’t do chicken like this anymore?

I do prefer Mary Brown’s over Popeye’s as well. This has much more flavour.

Yes I know it’s not good for you, but not everything in life has to be.
