New West BC

Do you remember the smell of a ABC or Pantry restaurant in the 90s? This is what greets you upon arriving at the Waffle House.

The ambiance will remind you of those restaurants as well.

As will the food….

One egg waffle breakfast

On first glance the waffle reminded me of an Eggo waffle. Unfortunately an Eggo waffle is preferable. Egg was overdone. The sausage? Best thing on the plate. Oh, I didn’t mention the fake maple syrup. Just as well that I didn’t.

The warmest thing on this plate was the plate itself. Potatoes dry and overcooked yet still cold. On a hot plate! I’m going need a physicist to explain that one to me. Not enough of a bland hollandaise on an overcooked egg. Very lightly toasted English muffin. Best thing I can say about this dish was the adequacy of the bacon.

So ya. Not overly impressed with the Waffle House.

Food 3/10

Ambiance 4/10

Value 2/10

Overall 3/10

Jim’s Cafe is next.

New Westminster BC

We though we might pop out for breakfast this morning so we hopped on the interweb and had a look see for something other than the Bruncheria or Angelina’s.

There’s quite a few breakfast spots in New West and we settled on 6th St. Grill, mostly because of their impressive selection of Bennies.

If your looking for some nostalgia and want to spend some time in the 70s this is the place for you. Though not in a good way.

The impression I get from this restaurant can be summed up in one word.

Lazy

Too lazy to change the decor.

Too lazy to properly hang the power cord for the TV so it’s out of sight.

Too lazy to properly warm up the hash browns.

Too lazy to make the crab cakes. Yes they are brought in. So you know they aren’t going to be great.

To lazy to properly crisp up the bacon.

And worst of all….

Too lazy to toast the English muffin.

This is truly a travesty in the Eggs Benny world.

If I had my way those who serve Eggs Benny on untoasted English muffins would be put into jail for crimes against the culinary world.

Just gross. I mean not edible. Gummy and bland. Truly awful.

The dish looked well enough. The potatoes would have been really good if they had been piping hot. Lukewarm as they were the potatoes were the best on the plate. The egg was cooked to order, soft please! The Hollandaise was tart, but really had little flavour otherwise.

I think I mentioned the undercooked bacon already.

Overall not great. However I will give props to the waitress a she did comp one of the Bennies as she could tell we weren’t happy.

Note for those of you who do want to try 6th St. Grill. They will toast the English muffin upon request.

However i’m not planning on going back to make this step necessary myself.

I will have to leave it to my imagination as to how incredibly mediocre dinner must be here.

Food 4/10

Ambiance 3/10

Value 6/10

Service 9/10

Overall 5/10

You’d be better off trying somewhere else in New West for breakfast.

Maybe “STOP” by the Bruncheria?

I am in the process of making Raviolo Uovo. I figured since I’m going to all this effort I may as well.add another step and make my own Ricotta.

It actually rather easy to make. A little milk and lemon juice and some time and your done.

I really like the taste and consistency. And it’s one more step I can control in the process.

I’ll probably never buy store bought ricotra again.

Is there anything better than cracking into, and then eating crab? Truly one of life’s little luxuries.

Tonight was crab night.

We had some Snow Crab by Toppits. It’s fully cooked, so thaw and serve. I prefer mine warm, so a few minutes in a pot with a little boiling water, then off to the feast.

It was easy to crack, then a quick bath in melted butter, then down the hatch.

Yum! So sweet and succulent.

Should have bought 2…….

It was excellent.

Snow Crab, Arctic Char and Shrimp with a light Alfredo sauce.

So good.

Sauteed Zucchini on the side.

Fresh made sauce is the key. I will be posting the recipe soon. You’ll never buy Alfredo again. Alfredo recipe here

I prefer a thick noodle for Alfredo.

For this dish I used Barilla Collezione Pappardelle, a pasta from their Artisan Collection.

This is a good Italian imported pasta which you can find in a lot of grocery stores here. It’s made with 100% Durum wheat flour and is Bronze cut.

While I didn’t make the Weiner’s, I did make the chili. And the bun.

Made myself a chicken soup.

Used a roast chicken from the deli at the store to make the stock. I zinged it up a little with a soup base paste.

Turned out great.

If your not familiar with Better than Boulliin this is my go to stock base.
