We are downtown celebrating Merilynn’s birthday and we are on our way to lose $100 at the casino but both of us need some caffeine first.

I try to avoid Starbucks whenever possible so we are on the lookout for a local coffee shop on our way.

We happened to walk by Rocanini Coffee Roasters just before they were closing.

When you’re in a good coffee place you don’t need to get anything put in your lattes. Not like Starbucks. A plain latte there is almost undrinkable nowadays.

But at a place like Rocanini you let the coffee shine.

Now that’s a good latte.

Smooth and creamy, not bitter at all. That’s as good as it gets.

Will definitely keep this in mind next time I’m in this part of town

This has to be right at the top of my favorite coffee shops in Vancouver.

I know, it would be sacrilegious to even mention that other place (the coffee shop from Seattle that shall not be named) in the same conversation. I only bring it up as Aperture reminds of what Starbucks used to, many years ago.

A cool place to hang out, listen to some great jazz and have a great cup of coffee.

The front lounge and coffee bar.

The even better back room. I could live here.

A motorbike.

And the coffee is fantastic.

A large here is 4 shots of espresso.

Boing!

And it’s delicious. A smooth balance between the espresso, vanilla and whole milk.

Come for the coffeee, stay for the vibe.

Aperture coffee is caffé buonissimo!

Alright I would like to know who else out there in New Westminster knows about Mukasi Coffee?

Until this morning I didn’t.

Maybe somewhere in my subconscious I may have seen a sandwich board or some other type of advertising for it but I certainly didn’t register.

It certainly somewhere you would be very unlikely to stumble across by accident, being on Front street. But not the cool part of Front Street where they do Fridays on Front. No, it’s right near the back entrance to the old Army and Navy, which has now become a shelter for the homeless, drug addicted, dregs of our society that the government refuses to deal properly with.

So if you’re brave enough to walk down Front St. from 6th and ignore the sadness, or take your life in your hands going down the stairs from the parkade at 4th, your not likely to find it. There is a way to access this area by car, I’m not sure how exactly though.

Which is a shame, as this place is great. And makes some damn fine coffee.

They roast their beans on site.

Tbe interior has that “old” New Westminster feel to it as well, which you find in a lot of the shops along Columbia. Lots of character in here.

And they make a fantastic latté.

The perfect temperature and a good balance of espresso to milk. No need for vanilla in a latté when its of this high quality.

So about two blocks from each other, in one of the sketchier parts of town, you will find two of the best coffee shops in New Westminster.

Just use caution while getting here.

One sip, you know the rules…

Popped in for a latte this mornin but discovered the only milk they had in stock was almond.

As I only drink milk from a cow I just had a doppio, which was excellent.

It’s been a minute since I have been to Café Mira.

Since we moved to the other end of town it’s not so convenient to get here.

But today I’m walking across town to get one. More for the walk, not the coffee.

The outside of Cafe Mira in Victoria Hills in New Westminster

Not that the coffee isn’t good. It definitely is. Not as good as Moodswing, but better than Starbucks

A latte sitting on the table

Nice latte, a bit too sweet though. One pump less of vanilla would be perfect.

if your in North Burnaby and want a good lattédo yourself a favour, skip the mediocrity at Starbucks and head to Modus Coffee Roasters.

Youll find it tucked away on Sperling just off Hastings.

Vanila Latté

Youll get a proper latté, made by someone who cares about the final product, with coffee roasted in house.

Ya that’s an excellent coffee. A good balance of coffee to milk to syrup. Not burned like the other place.

Just a little more expensive. But worth it.

Today’s question, is there a good latté in Prince George?

I was at the Starbucks on Central last night and it was good. Well, as good as any Starbucks is anywhere in the world.

Perfectly average.

But can we do better here?

A little birdie in town says yes. Try Ritual Coffeeworks.

Exterior Ritual Coffee

Like most architecture in this city it doesn’t look like much on the outside.

But what counts is on the inside.

Not just the bright, inviting atmosphere, but the excellent coffee.

A latté from Ritual coffee

That is a good a latté as any I’ve had anywhere.

Rich espresso, great foam and a perfect balance of vanilla.

My son had a Strawberry Matcha.

A strawberry matcha be erage from Ritual Coffee

Not something I would ever drink, but he said it was very good.

I’m very glad I checked out Ritual Coffeeworks this morning.

Will be making a visit here a ritual every time I’m in town.

In Mill Bay, just off the highway.

This the first coffee shop we ran into since we left Victoria.

It will do. The one in Parksville was just fine.

Not the best latte I’ve ever had but not the worst.

I do enjoy these smaller towns and their older buildings though. Everything is so gentrified in Vancouver.

Down on Front Street in New West is a little coffee bar we have walked by a few times.

As our disdain for Starbucks grows we certainly have wanted to try it out.

We just haven’t been able to yet as they are closed more hours in the week than they are open.

Today however is our lucky day.

Inside you will find a pretty eclectic, but appealing ambiance. Once you get over the hippie dippie, progressive, libtard vibe. “Just ignore that Free Palestine sweater for sale,” I said to myself, that was hanging on one lonely second hand clothing rack. It’s not odd at all to find that in a coffee shop at all is it?

As for that coffee, it was a truly great latte.

Thiis is the 12 ounce.

i had the 16 ooince whole milk with a touch of vanilla

Really good coffee. A latte made with care and attention.

So much better than Starbucks.

Even if this place has a Death seminar coming up in a couple weeks.

If you think I’m kidding, think again. It takes all kinds…..

10/10 for the coffee

1/10 for their political viewpoints

Update:

As is my custom I visited again a second time to see if the quality holds up.

While waiting for what turned out to be another excellent cup of coffee I pondered my surroundings.

My observations from my first visit were only further confirmed.

Moodswing Coffee only reinforces the trope that unless your latte is made by a bleeding heart libtard it’s not going to be any good.

I don’t often find myself in Vancouver two weekends in a row but here I am.

I loved that latte at Propoganda so much and I love Mello donuts so much that I’m going to go back this week.

I think this is probably the best latte I’ve had in Vancouver.

it has a perfect balance.

At Starbucks I can’t drink a regular latte. I have to add vanilla to cover the often burnt espresso. I can taste that in Merilynn’s drinks as she doesn’t have flavoring.

Here though you don’t need any flavor to cover up the beautiful taste of perfectly roasted and drawn espresso and seen milk that is actually done by hand. Not buy a machine.

Yes Starbucks I’m talking to you. You’re automatic machines suck. It may make wait times lower but it makes worse coffee.

and it happens to be just right beside Mello donuts. Isn’t that handy?

And yes the donuts were as great as usual. Sorry no picture. I was eating them too quickly

What a perfect treat.

In my attempt to give Starbucks less money, and get a really good donut while at it, I came to Chinatown today, in the rain.

Mello for the donuts. Propoganfa coffee for a latte.

That’s pretty much perfect.

Great espresso, perfect foam and not too sweet

A really nice balance.
