Gray Monk Meritage 2023 is a really enjoyable red from the Okanagan that’s easy to like and even easier to drink.

The first thing you’ll notice is the rich, fruity smell—think black cherry and plum, with a little hint of vanilla and sweet spices wafting through.

When you take a sip, it’s smooth and balanced, delivering juicy dark fruit flavors but not too heavy. The tannins are soft, so you don’t get any harshness—just an easygoing mouthful that finishes with subtle layers of spice and a touch of black tea.

This is a wine you could easily bring to a gathering or open on a quiet night; it feels pretty versatile.

At around $35 a bottle, it’s a great way to have one of he better, local red wines from BC without breaking the bank.

Score: 8/10—super reliable, friendly, and tasty.

I would definitely this one again.

Fairview Cellars’ The Bear is a truly exceptional red wine that delivers a masterful blend of depth, complexity, and elegance. From the first pour, the wine’s deep ruby hue hints at the richness to come. The bouquet is inviting, with aromas of ripe blackberries, cassis, and dark cherries, complemented by subtle notes of cedar, tobacco, and a hint of vanilla from the oak aging.

On the palate, The Bear is beautifully structured, showcasing silky tannins and a harmonious balance between fruit and acidity. Layers of dark fruit flavors, such as plum and blackcurrant, are interwoven with earthy undertones and a touch of spice, creating a dynamic and memorable tasting experience. The finish is long, smooth, and satisfying, leaving you eager for the next sip.

This wine is a testament to the skill and passion of Fairview Cellars, reflecting the terroir of British Columbia’s Okanagan region. It’s a versatile red that pairs wonderfully with hearty dishes like roast lamb, grilled steak, or a rich mushroom risotto, but it’s equally enjoyable on its own for a special occasion or quiet evening.

Fairview Cellars’ The Bear is a must-try for wine enthusiasts seeking a full-bodied, sophisticated red that stands out.

From a women only run winery in Oliver, a blend of Merlot, Syrah with a small addition of Can Franc and Malbec.

A medium bodied red with notes of loam and silt.

My first sip I immediately thought of dirt.

Ok maybe I’m not the one to review this wine.

It’s terrible.

Maybe not as terrible as the Diablo we had the other night. But ya, pretty bad.

However Merilynn didn’t think it was terrible.

I asked her to please never buy it again.

Hot garbage.

Hester Creek’s The Judge red wine is an impressive offering, showcasing a well-crafted blend of Bordeaux-style varietals. The wine opens with a deep garnet hue and a nose that offers aromas of ripe dark fruits like blackberries and plums, interwoven with hints of cedar, leather, and a touch of baking spice.

On the palate, the wine delivers a rich and full-bodied experience. Flavors of blackcurrant, dark cherry, and mocha are complemented by a subtle earthiness. The tannins are firm yet approachable, providing good structure, while the acidity adds a fresh lift to the overall profile. The oak influence is evident but not overpowering, contributing to a nice balance and a medium-long finish.

While The Judge is undeniably well-made, it lacks a certain level of complexity and finesse to push it into the upper echelon of wines. Some might find the flavors a bit too fruit-forward, and the finish, though pleasant, doesn’t linger as long as expected for a wine of this caliber.

That said, this wine pairs beautifully with hearty dishes like grilled lamb, beef stew, or aged cheeses, and it’s a solid choice for a special dinner.  The Judge offers a satisfying and enjoyable experience, particularly for fans of robust red blends, but it may leave those seeking more intricate layers of flavor wanting just a bit more.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

BC VQA

This is a big, bold red with a good tannin structure and flavours of ripe fruit, mint and eucalyptus.

A multiple award winning wine that pairs well with beef and venison.

A very good red from BC in the mid $30 range.
