Port Moody BC
Just off St John’s near the overpass to Rocky Point park is Hard Bean Brunch Co.
We had driven past it and it looked pretty busy. Then when we checked out the menu online we saw they have a Yorkshire Pudding Benedict.
Now I’m a sucker for a Benny, and I’ve been on a bit of a mission to find the best one around.
And I’ve never seen it done on a Yorkie.
Clearly I must try it.
I guess Sunday wasn’t the best day to go. It was very busy. A great vibe though. I love the atmosphere. We sat at the bar rather than waiting for a table.
The odd thing was that for as busy as it was our food arrived at our table about 4 minutes after ordering.
I’m still not sure how I feel about that.
It’s clearly better than having to wait 40 minutes. But what kind of prep work is being done to get food out of the kitchen in 4 minutes?
The first dish is understandable. Watermelon salad. Probably took 15 seconds to throw this together.
Spring mix with feta, watermelon and a balsamic dressing. Hard boiled eggs on the side.
The way the peppery bitterness from the Arugula complemented the sweetness of the watermelon and the sour of the balsamic was fantastic. The feta added that little bit of salt kick too. Really enjoyable.
It’s $15 though. But what isn’t in a restaurant today. It was delicious.
Up next the Benny.
I went with bacon, one of 4 choices.
Overall I liked the dish. Some points though.
The potatoes were clearly par cooked ahead of time. They didn’t quite reheat them properly for me though. They were partially cold when I got them. I don’t think 4 minutes was quite enough time to reheat them.
The Yorkies were not crisp and a bit bland compared to what I make at home. I would be surprised if these were made in house. I’m going to guess that these are probably from the same source that many pubs that I’ve been to use as they all seem to be very similar. But I could be wrong. They’re not hard to make but there is a knack to them. I don’t think this many restaurants would be getting them this right all the time.
However the eggs were poached nicely and the Hollandaise was nice.
There’s very good potential here. But today they missed by a little. I’d like to try this dish again when maybe they aren’t so busy.
