Bacchus

Vancouver BC

Last night I spent a little bit of time researching a good place for breakfast in Vancouver.

I’ve been to some good ones. Been to some ok ones. Been to some bad ones.

Today I want a good one. On the upper end of good.

One of the reasons I started writing this blog is that I found a lot of online reviews not particularly helpful. As I browsed through reviews and top 10 lists I really wasn’t inspired by anything I saw.

As it happens a couple weeks back we had an absolutely excellent dinner at Bacchus. Read my review of that great meal here.

And as I know they are a hotel restaurant I looked at their breakfast menu and yes they have what looks to be a pretty good Benny.

Well as you might know looks can be deceiving.

It wasn’t bad. But it did not live up to the expectations that I perhaps unfairly came in with.

So yes there is a reasonable amount of Hollandaise. Could it use more? Always. And yes the hollandaise was actually the best part of this dish. It was rich and tangy. The lemon came through perfectly.

The rest?

Meh.

The menu says the protein is Canadian back bacon. It could be. It could also be just ham. Couldn’t really tell. And honestly it was a bit too salty.

The eggs. Poached perfectly. But there was something not quite right. If you’ve poached eggs before you know one of the tricks is to put a little bit of vinegar in the water to help the egg stay together while poaching. When I was having a mouthful of egg with hollandaise I didn’t really notice anything funny tasting about it. But there was a bit of egg without any Hollandaise. The egg had quite a rather funny texture and did taste like vinegar. You’re only supposed to put like a tablespoon in so I’m not sure if the cook was cheating or what exactly was going on here but something was off.

The English muffin was toasted but honestly I wouldn’t mind if it was toasted a little bit more.

The hash browns were bland. Chef, you need salt and pepper on these.

So overall, this is maybe a little bit better than any Benny that you’re going to find in any other typical breakfast restaurant. But considering the $26 price tag, an overall disappointment.

So maybe skip breakfast here and just wait until dinner time. They knock that out of the park.

Food 5/10

Service 8/10

Ambiance 8/10

Overall 6/10
