Pizzeria Spacca Napoli

Port Moody BC

If you had asked me yesterday morning what my favorite pizza in the Vancouver area I would have said Pizzeria Spacca Napoli.

After last night that answer will probably be different.

The restaurant is quite a nice contemporary and inviting place. It was very busy, but not in an overwhelming way.

The first sight that greets you when you arrive at the door is this though.

Now I’m guessing that at some point in the past somebody must have lied about the true nature of the size of their party to warrant a greeting like this. But honestly it put me off. Way off. As you might have guessed only half of our party was there at that moment.

Note to the owner. You lost the sale of at least one round of drinks while we waited outside instead of seating us.

Anyways, we finally get seated  (I’ve cooled down by this point) and we get a round of drinks.

A Cosmo for her. Yummy!

Aperol Spritzer for me. Pretty good. It’s Aperol, Prosecco and soda. Very refreshing, though I wouldn’t mind just a hint of sweetness.

As for the pizza. We had a Campana. Capicollo, reggiano, basil and Fior Di Latte.

So Neopolitan style pizza should have a soft but crispy crust. Our pizza was soft and soggy. Like they put it on a plate full of water soggy. The server tried to explain it away as that it’s supposed to be soft so you can fold it over to eat it. If that’s what I wanted I’d order a calzone already.

To their credit though they did offer to replace it’s and the replacement was properly done.

Also got to try my buddies Cappicciosa. Mushrooms, olives, reggiano, artichokes and Fior Di Latte

Other than the olives and mushrooms it was quite nice. Those that like those ingredients told me it was the better of the two pizzas. I’ll have to disagree.

Our other friend had the lasagne. I didn’t get to try it, but the word Merilynn used to describe it was “horrid”. A frozen grocery store lasagne would have more flavour.

So let’s sum up the evening.

1. Bad first impression with the sign.

2. Ok drink.

3. Pizza like it was cooked in the bathtub.

4. God awful lasagne.

5. Did I mention not cheap?

So ya, let’s rethink the best pizza in Greater Vancouver. Perhaps Fire Pizza on Commercial? Ignite on Main? If you have any suggestions let me know. We will check them out.

Update

I was just informed that the teenager in the house reheated the leftovers in the air fryer and it was fantastic. Perhaps the key is to take it home and crisp it up yourself!

  1. Hi Greg it’s Claude .I follow your reviews most times some I agree with some not but this one was bang on .I had great expectations for this resteraunt and it’s a nice venue .But the soggy pizza closed the deal .

  2. I support the claims on your website about their pizzas being soggy (wet) and crust was burnt, as ours was recently, and thanks for the audience comments. The enclosed pictures posted on your website say a lot, and you’ll visualize black crusts that should not happen! A pizza slice is meant to hold in your hand despite some using utensils. Ours was a let down and the middle of the pizza was wet, gooey and looked uncooked. Despite it’s appeal, the pizza would not be a choice on our next visit, should we ever go again, which is highly unlikely. If you ordered pizza from most other competitors or Arabic food restaurants that use a similar cooking method and equipment you’ll rarely get black crusts.

Despite the facts, their fries were some of the best, as with two scorching hot pasta dishes our dinner party ordered, bravo for those dishes Spacca Napoli. The gelato was divine despite its small portion and the female server was alert and awesome. If you want a good dining experience that even Greg would probably endorse, let me recommend four top places that friends give us thanks for our advice, Ayam Zaman in Coquitllam, Afghan Chopan in Surrey, Mouneh/Crispy Falafel (joint eateries) in South Surrey and Jerusalem Grill in Langley. They are not pizza places but the portions and quality foods will give you the wow factor. KRM
